NSW: JI planned to destroy embassies with suicide bombers

SYDNEY, Dec 9 AAP - Jemaah Islamiah (JI) had reportedly planned to destroy Australianand other foreign embassies in Singapore using suicide bombers at the controls of deadlytruck bombs.

The Australian newspaper reports interrogation of a key JI figure has revealed thegroup's scheme, uncovered by Singapore authorities a year ago before it was fully planned.

It was originally intended for missions in the Philippines, but the change was madewhen JI decided there were not enough Israelis working in Manila to make an attack thereworthwhile.

Also, the US embassy was too well guarded.

The paper said the Singapore and Manila plans would have recruited suicide bombersfrom outside the Asian region, suggesting the web of the operatives to be comprehensivearound the world.

The sphere of suicide bombers was first examined when Indonesian police revealed thesuspected bomber of Paddy's bar in Bali had died in the blast.
