VIC:Fake Census collector stabs woman in home

Police are urging residents to check the identification of census collectors and any
salespeople before opening their security doors following a spate of attacks.

In the latest incident, a woman has been stabbed in her Melbourne home by a man posing
as a census collector.

Wielding a knife, the man forced his way through the front door of her North Geelong
home and demanded cash.

The 33-year-old woman suffered minor injuries to her neck during the attack.

On Saturday, a celebrity milliner was kneed in the groin and twice punched in the face
after answering the door of his Sydney home to a man claiming to be a census collector.

A similar incident occurred in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton earlier this month.

FED:Aust spends $25,000 on royal wedding gift

By Susanna Dunkerley

CANBERRA, April 18 AAP - What is the perfect wedding gift for a couple who appear to have it all?

In the case of Prince William and Catherine Middleton a donation to a favoured donation
will suffice.

Australia's official wedding gift to the couple, who will marry next week, is $25,000
to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Prince William, a qualified pilot, visited the RFDS base in Cairns during his recent
trip down under, in the wake of the summer floods and Cyclone Yasi.

The charity is one of 26 the royal couple asked well-wishers to donate to in lieu of
a wedding gift.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who's attending the April 29 ceremony with partner Tim
Mathieson, says it's a "very generous gesture" on behalf of the happy couple.

"To ask for donations that will go directly to helping out Australians when they need
it most," she said in a statement.

Australia gifted 20 handcrafted silver platters to Prince William's parents, Charles
and Diana, when they wed in 1981.

Shares in the company went up by 18.4p to 196.7p on Tuesday.

Ocado is expected to publish its sales for the fourth quarter and possibly for the holidays shopping season next Monday.

Analysts expect Ocado's sales growth to be in the area of 30%. Some also believe that the company would be heading for profitability.

The demand for Ocado's shares was driven by institutional investors and hedge funds trying to cover short positions.

FED:Greens can deal with hung parly: Brown

HOBART, Aug 20 AAP - The Greens are the only party with the experience to handle a
hung federal parliament, Greens leader Bob Brown says.

The Tasmanian senator says the Greens have also shown they are "responsible" on the
economy, having helped save the country from recession by carrying Labor's second stimulus
package through the Senate.

With the polls all pointing to a knife-edged result, the historically rare prospect
has arisen of neither party gaining a majority in the lower house.

Senator Brown said his party would be well equipped to deal with that outcome, with
he and fellow Greens senator Christine Milne both having served in minority Tasmanian
governments.

"If there were to be a balance of power in the lower house, then we would use all our
experience - and it's greater than the other parties - to ensure that Australians get
the best possible outcome," Senator Brown told reporters in Hobart on Friday.

"If it was to happen, there can be no more experienced team in Australian history."

If the Greens were to win lower house seats, it would make things tougher for the Liberals
to form government, he said.

"(Melbourne candidate) Adam Bandt has said if he's elected and he's in that situation
- and it's quite unlikely - that he's not going to install an Abbott government."

Speaking on ABC radio on Friday, Senator Brown said his party was responsible for helping
save the country from recession.

"It was the Greens who put through the stimulus package ... shielded Australia from
recession and saved hundreds of thousands of jobs", Senator Brown said.

"We have got a responsible record."

The Greens, along with two other crossbench senators, supported Labor's second economic
stimulus package in 2008 at the height of the global financial crisis.

The coalition voted against the second package after supporting the first one.

Senator Brown predicts the Greens will add to their five Senate seats in Saturday's election.

Doing so would give them a stronger mandate in the next parliament to argue for a proper
return on resources, more education funding, high-speed rail, and to protect forests and
a carbon tax, he said.

"The growing Green vote will be taken note of by the government, but the Greens will
be reasonable and responsible about this."

Senator Brown rejected suggestions that a vote for the Greens was a vote for Labor.

"When you are voting "green" you are voting to elect Greens into the parliament, to
take it up to whoever is the next government," he said.

Qld: Slump in tunnel users

BRISBANE, April 13 AAP - The number of motorists using Brisbane's new Clem7 tunnel
has slumped in the first week of tolls being imposed.

Motorists have been given a three-week reprieve from tolls, with the number of users
averaging 59,109 between March 16 and April 5.

But operator RiverCity Motorway Group said in a statement traffic volumes for the first
week of tolling, ending April 12, averaged 20,602.

This was despite a discounted toll rate applying.

There were an average 21,977 workday trips and 17,165 non-workday trips.

RiverCity Motorway chief executive Flan Cleary said it was too early to judge the success
or otherwise of the tunnel.

"The opening of the Clem7 represents a major change for Brisbane motorists," he said.

"Therefore it may take some months for travel patterns to become apparent."

The tunnel will remain toll-free between the hours of midnight to 5am until May 9.

For the remainder of the day, tolls for all motorists will be discounted by 30 per cent.

Full tolls will be imposed from midnight May 9.

The ASX-listed company now plans to release monthly traffic volume reports.

Qld: Man charged after allegedly throwing water at minister

Eds: Includes details of charges laid against protester

By Jessica Marszalek

BUNDABERG, Aug 30 AAP - Police have charged a man who threw water at a Queensland government
minister and was ejected from a community cabinet meeting in Bundaberg amid an angry residents'
protest.

About 300 protesters, irate over plans to sell off government assets and low teachers'
pay, chanted and held up signs as Premier Anna Bligh and her cabinet colleagues arrived
at the meeting at Bundaberg North State High School on Sunday.

Inside, a man used the public forum to criticise the Building Services Authority (BSA)
for not helping him after he lost "everything" to a dodgy builder who promised to build
his house.

"I voted for you. I'm sorry I did," he told Ms Bligh.

Afterwards, he met with Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten to discuss the matter one-on-one.

However, the man was escorted outside by police after he threw a jug of water at the
minister and then tried to hit him with it.

Mr Schwarten put his hands out to defend himself as police officers pulled the man
away. The man lost his shoes in the scuffle.

Mr Schwarten is not pressing charges and said he felt sorry for the man who was not
covered under the BSA's powers due to the nature of the fraud.

It's understood the man paid upfront for a kit home but did not sign the appropriate
contract that would have afforded him insurance under the BSA.

The 48-year-old man was charged with public nuisance and obstructing police and will
face the Bundaberg Magistrates' Court on September 18, a police spokesman said.

Earlier on Sunday, Ms Bligh tried to defuse the situation outside the cabinet meeting
by inviting representatives inside to discuss their concerns at the public forum.

The protesters manned the entrance to the school to voice their objections to the planned
sale of government assets such as Queensland Rail's coal haulage business, Queensland
Motorways, the Port of Brisbane and Forestry Queensland.

A group of unionists also chanted that Queensland teachers were the lowest paid in
the country and called on the premier to negotiate their wages.

Ms Bligh addressed the protesters inside the meeting, telling those gathered she knew
there was a "rocky road ahead" when it came to the assets sales and she understood why
people did not like the idea.

"I don't like it," she said.

"I wish there wasn't a global economic crisis ... I wish there weren't people losing their jobs."

But, she said, difficult decisions were needed to keep the government building program
funded and on track to create jobs for Queenslanders.

"Even with some sale, in the next three years you will own more than you do now because
of our building program," she told attendees.

Sunday's community cabinet, which gives residents outside of Brisbane the chance to
meet one-on-one with government ministers and senior departmental officers, attracted
the largest number of registered attendees.

Fed: Business split over climate change

Some businesses plan to hire thousands more workers and invest billions of dollars
if emissions trading goes ahead.

Big businesses who oppose emissions trading have dominated the headlines with warnings
of job losses and plant closures .. but submissions made to a Senate enquiry show there's
two sides to the story .. and the business community is split.

Wind turbine manufacturer Vestas says it will employ two thousand more people and invest
six billion dollars if emissions trading goes ahead next year as planned.

Vestas says the delay in passing the ETS is another obstacle for investment and jobs.

Pacific Hydro strongly backs the scheme and has asked for it to start as soon as possible
.. saying it will boost investment in clean energy.

And petroleum giant Shell strongly backs emissions trading .. saying it will give industry
the certainty to invest in clean energy.

Qld: Six teenagers stabbed at party

By Chris Herde

BRISBANE, April 2 AAP - Six teenagers have been stabbed at an 18th birthday party in
Brisbane's north in fights with gatecrashers.

Two 16-year-old boys are in hospital, one in a serious condition and the other stable,
following the clash which took place overnight.

Police said they were called to a house in Sheena Street, Geebung, around 1.10am (AEST)
following reports of a disturbance.

The offenders fled as police arrived and attended the victims.

Dozens of gatecrashers, some armed with knives, were reported to have invaded the party
around midnight, swelling numbers from 40 to well over 100.

Police said they believe the gatecrashers involved in the fight were from a gang based
in the northern suburbs.

"The party was closed down by the family and all the partygoers left the address and
a number of fights then ensued after that," Detective Inspector Peter Duncan said.

It is believed the gatecrashers were alerted to the party by text messages and mobile
phone calls.

One partygoer, who used only his first name Nathan, described it as "very, very, very
terrifying".

"All my mates came running out of the house, saying all these people are getting stabbed
inside," he told Channel Ten News.

A 16-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital were later released.

Another 16-year-old boy was treated at the scene by ambulance officers for a small
stab wound and a 17-year-old girl later reported she had suffered superficial wounds.

None of the injuries were considered life threatening.

A 20-year-old man is helping police with their inquiries.

Brown, Gordon

Brown, Gordon (b. 20 Feb. 1951) British; Chancellor of the Exchequer 1997– Brown was educated in Edinburgh and graduated from the university with a Ph.D. He worked as a lecturer, and then as a journalist and editor on current affairs programmes in Scottish television. His background shows in his skills as a communicator, both in writing press releases and in broadcast interviews. He entered the House of Commons in 1983, winning the safe Labour seat of Dunfermline East and was elected to the Labour Shadow Cabinet in 1987, on the strength of a number of good parliamentary performances. He then held a number of senior economic posts, starting with the job of shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. This post enabled him to substitute for the shadow Chancellor John Smith during the latter's lengthy convalescence following a heart attack. In 1989 he was promoted to be shadow Trade and Industry spokesman.

Following Labour's 1992 election defeat he succeeded Smith as shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer when the latter was elected party leader. At the time Brown was seen as the next party leader. He was bitterly disappointed when, on Smith's death in 1994, he found that his close friend Tony Blair had overtaken him. Although Brown agreed not to stand for the leadership, it took some time for him to come to terms with his failure. However, the two continued to work closely in modernizing the party. He also took the view that it was no longer sufficient for Labour to rely on the working class and the trade unions, and that it would have to appeal to the more affluent and aspirational voters. It would also have to relegate the role of public ownership, and its traditional commitment to redistribution by taxation. Brown kept an iron control over the spending promises of his colleagues. This enabled him to make a crucial announcement before the general election that Labour would accept the Conservative public spending plans for the next two years and hold income tax rates for the lifetime of the next parliament. In the new Labour government formed in May 1997 Brown was made Chancellor of the Exchequer.

A PACKAGE DEAL; HOME-FURNISHINGS BUYERS FLOCK TO CATALOGS.(HOME & GARDEN)

If you shopped the catalogs for Christmas, you may have noticed that the catalog from which you ordered your daughter's sweater also sells sofas. And chairs. And tables. And towels. When it comes to catalogs, home furnishings are hot.

Clothing catalogers such as J. Peterman, Banana Republic and Spiegel are offering furnishings in addition to their staple of men's and women's fashions. Specialty catalogs that once sold only kitchenware, home accessories or bed linens are adding furniture to their lines. And old standbys such as Spiegel are spawning new home-furnishings catalogs while new furnishings catalogs are being introduced at dizzying rate.

"It [home furnishings] is the fastest-growing segment of the catalog business," said Maxwell Sroge, president of Maxwell Sroge catalog consulting company in Evanston, Ill. "People are putting a lot more emphasis on fixing up the home, and there is the money to do it."

More and more Americans are comfortable doing their home-furnishings shopping from home. According to recent research by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), home furnishings and housewares are right behind clothing when it comes to catalog shopping and account for nearly 20 percent of the $87 billion catalog industry. Internet sales add another $4.7 billion to the burgeoning "electronic shopping" business.

The eagerness with which consumers are buying furnishings and furniture from catalogs has surprised even catalogers.

"We had some reservations," admitted Kimberly Ruthenbeck, store general manager for Room & Board, about the Golden Valley company's mail-order business, which was introduced a year ago. "Who would want to buy a sofa they can't sit on?" But sales for the company's catalog division have been "phenomenol," she said.

Catalogers, including Room & Board, count convenience as a key to their appeal.

"Most householders are in the work force and don't have the time to shop," agreed Sroge. "Time is really the scarcest commodity we have today."

The catalogs also can offer a wide array of items - which can be pictured in different colors, sizes and patterns - that many retailers lack the floor space to display. And there is an immediacy to catalog shopping that many retail stores can't match. Most catalogers and online retailers strive to have items in stock so they can be shipped right away.

"Our primary goal is immediate gratification," said Amy Crain, president of Room, a New York City-based contemporary furniture catalog. "You don't need to wait 12 weeks for a sofa."

And catalogers and online retailers often are price competitive with over-the-counter retailers. However, shipping fees and the cost of returns, if not covered by the cataloger, can boost the price of a mail-order purchase.

"It [catalog shopping] is quick and easy if it's right, but if it's wrong, it's not so easy," said Susan Hoffman, owner of Wayzata-based DESIGNS! and president of the Minnesota chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. Hoffman said she has had clients who were "stuck" with catalog purchases because of the high cost of return shipping and handling fees.

While catalogers report that furniture and furnishings sell equally well, the

items that are easiest to buy over the phone or electronically include linens and accessories. Bed and bath linens come in standard sizes and accessories and small furnishings - such as lamps, side tables and dining room chairs - don't have to pass a comfort test and are less expensive to ship than larger items.

But catalogers caution that expensive upholstered pieces and case goods shouldn't be impulse buys. Instead, they urge customers to take the time to learn as much as they can about a piece. Many companies have well-trained phone sales representatives who are familiar with the furniture, and some even offer design consultation via phone, fax and mail.

"It's not like ordering a shirt," said Room & Board's Ruthenbeck. "The dialogue back and forth is incredible. The experience in mail order is virtually the same as in the store. We send out wood samples and steel samples. We've even had people fax in a floor plan to have our designers help place furniture."

Of course, no catalog or online service can offer a sit-test for a sofa. So, if comfort is key, consider visiting the catalog store - if there is one nearby - or shopping what catalogers call "regular retail."

"You have a group of people who are confident shopping from catalogs," said Sroge. "They're different from those who like to touch and feel and sit and who enjoy the social aspect of shopping."

If you are one of the latter, catalogs still can help you learn about what you like. Hoffman often encourages clients to clip pictures from catalogs to help define their sense of style.

"It [a catalog] is a great information tool," she said, "but if you're leery about making a purchase, don't do it."

1/3 Catalog shopping is convenient but buyers should be prepared

Convenience is one of the appeals of catalog and online shopping. And operators may well be standing by to take your call. But before you pick up the phone or go online, take a minute to read these safe-shopping tips.

- Try a test run.

"Before you spend hundreds of dollars, spend tens of dollars," advised Maxwell Sroge, president of Maxwell Sroge catalog consulting company. "Try a catalog and see how it satisfies your needs. See how fast they ship and the service they provide."

- Know the return and exchange policy. Read the customer service section of the catalog or Web site and find out who is responsible for shipping fees for returning or exchanging items.

- Ask questions. Find out as much as you can about the items you're interested in. Many service representatives have detailed information about each item they sell. So, ask about construction, materials, durability and care.

- Get samples. Some companies will send fabric swatches and wood samples. A few even provide personal shoppers to help you measure and match catalog items, or over-the-phone design consultations to help you meld your new purchases with your existing interior.

- Check delivery schedules and shipping options. Most catalogers and online shopping services offer both regular and express shipping services. You may need to be home to receive a larger item, so be sure to ask. Because some companies charge by the cost of the item, others by the weight, shipping fees vary. Make sure you know the total shipping cost and figure that into the cost of the item before you make a purchase.

- Inspect each item when you receive it. If an item is damaged or incorrect, contact the company's customer service department immediately. Reputable catalogers and online retailers should replace the damaged or incorrect item free of charge. However, if you have a complaint that a cataloger or online retailer will not satisfy, contact the Direct Marketing Association by writing Mail Order Action Line, 1111 19th St. NW., Washington, DC 20036.
