Firms' loss from Net shopping guessed

Workers who spend time shopping online at the office could costAmerican employers more than $500 million in lost productivity, PearlSoftware Inc. said.

Pearl got the figure by calculating the number of Americans whouse the Internet at work and multiplying it by the mean hourly wageof $12.64 for office and administrative employees, the closely heldcompany said. About 42 million Americans use the Internet at work, according to Nielsen//NetRatings, Pearl said.

The wage for office and administrative workers is at the low endof the pay scale, so the productivity loss may be greater, CEO DavidFertell said.

Many companies are adding software that helps them keep track ofand manage their employees' Internet usage, said Philadelphia-basedPearl, which makes such software.
